Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a vital part of traditional Chinese medicine. Today, practitioners across the globe use acupuncture in their treatment plans. Acupuncture helps patients manage a wide range of health concerns.

Research shows that acupuncture can help relieve or benefit:

  • Chronic pain
  • Nausea
  • Inflammation
  • Abnormal blood pressure
  • Gastric problems

Many patients choose to receive acupuncture as a standalone treatment. But acupuncture can also be part of a comprehensive care plan. When all other treatments have failed, acupuncture can be a key part of the puzzle.

How does acupuncture work?

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that acupuncture improves the flow of energy within your body. In the West, practitioners use acupuncture to stimulate nerves. Acupuncture can also increase blood flow and boost your body's natural painkillers.

At CHW Cares, you receive acupuncture treatments tailored to meet your unique needs. Before a session begins, your provider evaluates your physical condition and performs a brief physical exam. Next, they develop a customized acupuncture strategy.

What happens during an acupuncture session?

During a session, your provider may have you lie on your back, stomach, or side. Once you're comfortable, they insert very thin, sterile needles into various points on your body. They usually place needles into your back or neck. You may also receive acupuncture on your face, hands, joints, or abdomen.

Acupuncture treatments are not painful. Some patients may feel a slight sensation of heat or pressure during treatment. If you experience discomfort, your provider can adjust the placement of the needles.

Most acupuncture treatments at CHW Cares take about half an hour. During that time, you can rest quietly in the treatment room. Some patients even fall asleep during their acupuncture sessions.

What kind of results can I expect from acupuncture?

Acupuncture results can vary. Most people report feeling energized after their treatment. If you have chronic pain, you may feel immediate relief. But sometimes, it takes a few days to feel the full effects of your treatment.

Stubborn illness or injury sometimes causes lingering discomfort. If you still struggle with chronic pain, CHW Cares can provide follow-up care. The practitioners deliver comprehensive treatments to provide lasting pain relief.
